Savannah and Drew of Our Way To Roam design, build, and install a game-changing collapsible hard wall bathroom space. Think you can’t have a walled bathroom in a half-ton or mid-size truck camper? Think again!

The first thirty seconds of the following video could change camper design forever. And if that’s not enough, 25:40 to 28:35 brings it home.

The Current Accepted Truth 

For the past decade, there’s been a growing interest in ultra-lightweight hard side truck campers for half-tons and mid-size trucks. To conserve the necessary space and weight to fit and payload match half-ton and mid-size trucks, these hard side camper designs forgo walled bathrooms. 

If there is a toilet or shower in these models, the features are contained under a dinette or seating cushion. Invariably, this means the toilet and/or shower requires set-up to use and offers zero privacy for the prudish among us who still care about such things. Count me among them. 

I think the greater truck camper universe has resolved to this ‘truth’. The thinking goes, if you want a hard side truck camper for a half-ton or mid-size truck, you give up a hard side bathroom. 

Introducing The Collapsible Hard Wall Bathroom Space 

I, too, had accepted this ‘truth’ until I came across a video from Savannah and Drew of Our Way To Roam. In a nutshell, these two have designed, built, and installed a collapsible hard-walled shower and bathroom space. In doing so, they have likely created one of the most important changes to truck campers in the past few years.

Essentially, Savannah and Drew created a movable bathroom wall that rolls out along tracks in the camper floor and ceiling to create a bathroom space. 

When the bathroom space collapses into travel mode, it takes up about six inches inside the camper. Even better, they can recapture the collapsed bathroom space for seating and still access their toilet.

The Potential Impact

There will always be folks who don’t see the need for inside showers and/or inside bathrooms with privacy. That’s fine, but the great majority of humans take inside showers and walled bathrooms with privacy for granted. 

If we want to grow the truck camper market, or if a half-ton or mid-size camper manufacturer wants to stand out from their competition, a walled bathroom space with a shower and toilet could be a game changer. 

Well done, Savannah and Drew! We are excited about where this concept will go, and the appeal it will likely have in the truck camping marketplace. Brilliant idea!
